How are contributions made to my HSA account?

Contributions can be made by you, your employer or both. The total contributions are limited annually and can be found on our website at There are two ways you can contribute to your HSA account:

  • Do the paperwork- send your contribution to the bank. Since you’ve paid taxes on this money already you’ll have to deduct this amount when you file your taxes.
  • Skip the paperwork- avoid the taxes and have your employer deduct your contribution pre-tax from your paycheck. They will forward your contribution to the bank. Your contributions     are tax-free so there’s no need to worry about deducting on your taxes.

What is eligible with my HSA account?

Eligible medical expenses are defined by the IRS in Section 213(d) and are listed in IRS Pub 502. Most medical, dental, and vision expenses are eligible. These expenses can be for you, your spouse or your dependents even if they are not covered on your High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP).

How do I get reimbursed for my expenses?

You don’t have to submit receipts to receive your reimbursement. However, you need to keep receipts and documentation for each year’s federal tax return (Form 8889 attached to Form 1040). You can make a withdrawal at any time. Reimbursements for qualified medical expenses are tax-free. If you are disabled or reach age 65, you can receive non-medical distributions without penalty, but you must report the distribution as taxable income. You may also use your funds for a spouse or dependent not covered under your HDHP.

If I leave my current company, do I lose my HSA account?

The account belongs to you, not the employer, and is portable if you change jobs.

How do I check my balance on my HSA?

You can log in to with your username and password. Once you’ve logged in to your account, you will be able to see the balance of your HSA. You can also track your HSA account with your smartphone by downloading the myCafeteriaPlan On The Go application.
